Proverbs 17. 1-5 Page 823.
1. A dry crust of bread eaten in peace and quiet is better than a feast eaten where everyone argues.
2. A wise slave will be placed in charge of a no-good child, and that slave will be given the same inheritance that each child receives.
3. Silver and gold are tested by flames of fire; our thoughts are tested by the Lord.
4. Troublemakers listen to troublemakers, and liars listen to liars.
5. By insulting the poor, you insult your Creator. You will be punished if you make fun of someone in trouble.

Meaning is very subjective to where you are at any given moment. What I take from 8/23/68 and what you take are usually two different things.
Proverbs is more of a "what" than a "who".

Proverbs 23.8
Don't accept an invitation
to eat a selfish person's food,
no matter how good it is.
People like that take note
of how much you eat.
They say, "Take all you want!"
But they don't mean it.
Each bite will come back up,
and all your kind words
will be wasted.

Proverbs 23.9
Don't talk to fools-
they will make fun of you.

Proverb:
There shall in that time be rumors of things going astray, erm, and there shall be a great confusion as to where things really are, and nobody will really know where lieth those little things with the sort of raffia-work base, that has an attachment. At that time, a friend shall lose his friend's hammer, and the young shall not know where lieth the things possessed by their fathers that their fathers put there only just the night before, about eight O'clock.

Now, if that doesn't sum it up perfectly, I don't know what does.

...and most American's muttling through in a drug-induced consumer haze. That's what I see.

Can the classic ideal of religion be worse than this consumerism? Can our Nation wake-up without faith?

We're like bees or ants...live, work, consume, get sick("hopefully for an extended period" - drug manufacturers) and die. Where is the compassion for the human element?

Fast food and drugs(pharm/legal and meth) are killing the Frontal Lobe of Americans. That which seperates us from the rest of the animals here on Earth....it's a fragile conciousness.

There's too much confusion here -- who are responding to prednisone or me? I don't go to any URL' outside of here. What do you mean, "I am one of those?" Are you "pro-verb" or "pro-noun?" How many shows did you see with PigPen playin'?

Lol:

"There's too much confusion, I can't no relief"?
God is a verb.

Pig shows? Geeze. Give me a minute on DeadBase. Somewhere near 40-50. If you count all those Fillmore East gigs as two shows, unlike Owsley.
I used to catch runs, like the Academy of Music, the Felt Forum, Capital Theater (yay 3 from the vault!) (1970 Capital shows as well), Fillmore East April 1971 ( I think I caught every F.E. show), some of those 1967 Cafe AU Go Go shows, maybe a dozen outside of New York (Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati--though Pig was missing in 1971).

-- 1967 shows? ...oh, man, you must be a Saint or something...what an incredible trip to see them from the beginning. You're the only person outside the band that I know that saw them in 1967. Goddamn, well I declare, that is very cool -- you must have made it up my way to the "Arc" or "The Boston Tea Party"(?) (I was burnin' "Mother McCree's" from 1963 last night = Weir was only 16 - crazy stuff.

Never made it to beantown, Saw them in New York, N.J., Portchester, Philly, Cleveland/Columbus/Cinci, Ann Arbor/Detroit, and once in Atlanta.

That was plenty for me!!! I only wish I had seen them in S.F. at the Fillmore, Avalon, or Winterland--different vibes out there.

ghostofpig; wild coincidence; I just wrote to somebody that today and tomorrow arte the 1980 Boulder anniversary shows. Though they were about only my tenth show I was amazed at the different energy level -- I just walked straight up to the stage and stood near Jerry and snapped a few pictures with a camera I snuck in. --- it was too "laid back" for me and the shows were not memorable except for the opening of the 1st set on the 8th (UJB > Playin > UJB)
How many shows did you see? Any real favorites or favorite sets? I saw a bunch of Clapton shows as well.

What an amazing time, eh? Just a few head shops with Strawberry Zig-Zags and day-glo posters. A very small scene that blew up over that summer. Small venues, secrets, hair starting to grow, bell bottom jeans, the word, "psychedelic,"
Surrealistic Pillow, Axis: Bold as Love. The Grateful Dead. Sgt. P. We're Only in it for the Money.

cush212:
Don't call yourself an "old fart" -- you guy's got some great survival skills --- your the guys that should have written books after Jerry departed instead of the vultures. Did you use a different name and then switch to "cush212?" There's too much confusion here.

Here's an attempt to clear up confusion regarding "Walker After Midnight" it was never performed by Hunter or Jerry. I wrote to Hunter about the lyrics after Jerry's departure and he directed me to:

June Rushing (http://www.junerushing.com/bios.html) where you get to read that: "June's voice alone will take you to the edge of your universe, that spiritual universe we call the mind, and bring you back..............." (There did not appear to be any tunes on her site for download or stream)

Phil put music to the lyrics in 2000 and made some changes to the lyrics (including a new title: "Walkin' After Midnight")
http://www.phillesh.net/philzonepages/friends_stuff/lyrics2.html

I've been told he hasn't performed it in concert. (I've only seen him once.....two songs were plenty so I left for a distant shore.)

Vince Welnick put music to it and played it with "Missing Man Formation" You can download it (along with 24 other tunes) at:
http://www.vincewelnick.com/index.php?name=zina&op=modload&file=index&p=mp3

Additional info., including the various changes (which leads one to believe that Phil performed it someplace -- rehearsal possibly?) info can be found at:
http://www3.clearlight.com/~acsa/introjs.htm?/~acsa/songfile/WALKERAF.HTM

As for the knock-out punch to the head and gut, "Touch of Darkness:" a solo, live version from Nov. 1981 was released on HUnter's album, "Promontory Rider: A Retrospective Collection" (some songs had been released on previous albums)
